The first book I think of is The phenomenon of men by Teilard de Chardin. He took a new look at the evolution which was different from Darwins approach. He says that there is a development of the evolment of human conciousness. It was the 1st independent book I read. But I must say that I find it a bit naive what he said about the a-bomb.
The 2nd book: The philosophy of freedom by Rudolf Steiner. I was already very familiar with about 20 other philosophers, when I read it. I liked geometry and I liked the expansion of thought. I asked myself: What could be the fundamental principles, when they are not artificial but are build out of experience? Steiner was the one who answered that. I had to struggle with it, cause it destroyed so much. I bought about 20 copies of it to include all my annotations. It took me a while to understand, that this is not a philosophers book, but a training manual for the development of human consciousness.
The 3rd one was really decisive for the last 15 years for me: Civil society and political theory by Jean Cohen. It explains the history of civil society from Aristoteles to the 1980s and answers the question how it is possible to transfer large scale systems as society.
There are two more: The legitimation crisis by Jürgen Habermas, which helped me understand the fundamental idea of the three sectors. And after the revolution, which analyces 40 revolutions if they were successful. The most were not. That shows that capturing power is not enough to change society.
